Curt Schilling sets an all time record for me with 18 K's but loses
ReplyDelete2001 Diamondbacks vs. 2003 Giants Game 6
Stories galore from game 6. First we are headed to yet another game 7 as the Giants beat Arizona 5-1. The game was scoreless through 4 innings. Arizona had two runners on board in the first before Luis Gonzalez lined in to a double play. In the Giants second, Andres Galarraga singles and Jose Cruz doubled before Curt Schilling wiggled out of it. Arizona got 2 runners on in the third but faied to score. The Giants loaded the bases in the fourth but Schilling struck out opposing pitcher Kirk Rueter. That gave him 7 Ks in 4 innings, striking out the side (despite the 3 base runners) in the 4th.
The Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the 5th when Marquis Grissom singled home 1 run. But Schilling then struck out the next 3 batters giving him 10 K's in 5 innings. Arizona loaded the bases in the 6th with 2 outs before Jay Bell struck out. Schilling K's 5 more in the 6th and 7th giving him 15 K's over 7 innings. My all time record for K's in a game dates back to the summer of 1972 when while on vacation in Santa Cruz, CA, 1965 Sandy Koufax struck out 17 1927 Yankees in a 2-0 win. Schilling has an outside shot but his team trails. I decide to let Schilling bat in the 7th when it is still 1-0. Schilling K's 2 more in the 8th to tie my personal game record of 17 but gives up a 2 run HR to Ray Durham, it is now 3-0. Luis Gonzalez homers in the 8th to cut the lead to 3-1.
In the 9th, Schilling strikes out Barry Bonds to set my all time record with 18 K's ... and there are still 2 more outs left in the 9th inning. But Marquis Grissom singles and Andres Galarraga, like Durham, gets a 4-9 roll off Schilling (HR 1-18) and cashes in. Suddenly it is 5-1 Giants. The last 2 batters fly out and ground out. Arizona gets 2 runners on in the 9th but Rueter takes a page from Schilling's book and K's Pinch hitter Erubiel Durazo and Tony Womack to seal the win.
