Note:
As far as I can tell, the choices for the 6 1900-1910 teams and 8 1920-30
Series B teams were in large part based upon voting in Strat-O-Matic Review
polls.
Thoughts:
Biggest gap was between 1911 and 1919 - 8 years. The deadball era is really
under represented with SOM. Some tough choices = the 1929-30-31 A's were all
excellent but only the 31 A's did not win the series. Some consider the 1929
A's a top 5 team all time. Likewise, the 1936-37-38-39 Yankees all won the
series, some consider the 1939 Yankees another top 5 team all time, but the 36
Yankees were chosen. Cardinals teams in 42, 43, 44 and 46 all made the series, SOM chose 1946. The Brooklyn
Dodgers 1953 and 1955 is a great debate. A great hitting team in 1953 but
missing Newcombe and not winning the series was chosen over 1955 - the only
Brooklyn team to win a series and of course Newcombe was back from MS. And
lord, the Yankees in the 50s, with 8 pennants and 6 world championships, hard
to choose. I like the 1950 team a lot but also 1953 and 1956 are very strong
candidates. Nothing from 1951. a great historical baseball year, and a lot of
famous world series are represented but not 1956 where you had a perfect game. A
curious choice was the 1962 Mets, the 1966 Orioles or 1968 Tigers would have
been a much better choice. I think the 1964 Cards stand up very well to the
1967 Cards. And the 63-65-66 Dodgers are have something to prop them up, even
the 1962 Dodgers were a fine choice.
Notable
teams I would have considered: 1903 Pilgrims (Red Sox) and Pirates - first
world series, 1906 White Sox, 1908 Cubs (last world champ), 1912 Giants and Red
Sox, 1914 Braves, 1915 Phillies, 1916 Red Sox (Babe Ruth 23-12 1.75 ERA), 1917
White Sox, 1919 Reds, 1926 Cards, 1929 A's, 1932 Yankees, 1933 Senators, 1939
Yankees, 1940 Tigers, 1942 Cards, 1942 Dodgers (2nd place with .675 win %),
1944 Browns and Cards, 1945 Tigers and Cubs, 1948 Braves and Red Sox, 1951
Yankees, Dodgers and Giants, 1953 Yankees, 1955 Dodgers, 1956 Dodgers and
Yankees, 1959 White Sox, 1960 Yankees., 1962 Dodgers, 1966 Orioles, 1968
Tigers.
In
1981, Strat-O-Matic released 36 "Past Season" Teams from 1962-1976,
originally 60% of their original size and trivia buffs will note this was the first ever perforated sheet
production by SOM. Again a poll in the Strat-O-Matic Review was very
instrumental in choosing the teams

I once had broken down the 36 teams into all categories, NL and NL, World Champs, Pennant winners, also rans etc. ... and have seen the exact wording and phrasing used on many ebay items featuring t his set. Too funny.
Thoughts:
Interesting they included 3 consecutive Orioles teams (1969, 1970, 1971) of
which only one was a World Champion but only included the 1972 A's of the 3 straight
A's World Champions in 1972-1973-1974, not to mention 1971 which might have
been their best team in that era. They did not include the 1975 Reds, nor the
1976 Reds, Yankees or Phillies. The 1965 Indians, a 5th place team, were included probably just for Sam McDowell
(17-11, 2.18 ERA, 325 K) but although the 1962 Angels were included, the 1964
Angels, a 5th place team, with Cy Young Award winner Dean Chance (20-9, 1.65
ERA) was not. The 1969 Pilots and Expos expansion teams were included but not
the 1969 Royals and Padres expansion teams. Notable teams I would have
considered: 1962 Reds, 1963 Cards, 1964 Orioles, 1964 Giants, 1965 Reds, 1966
Giants, 1967 Twins, 1967 Tigers, 1969 A's, 1971 A's, 1971 Giants, 1971
Cardinals, 1971 Tigers, 1972 Pirates, 1972 Cubs, 1972 Tigers, 1973 A's, 1973
Orioles, 1973 Reds, 1974 A's, 1975 Reds, 1976 Yankees, 1976 Reds, 1976
Phillies.
